This is a hand-embellished photograph, a highly popular art format between the 1880s and 1920s. Artists would take a small, faded photograph and project it onto a larger canvas or paper, then trace and enhance the image using charcoal, pastel, or crayon to give it a dramatic, high-contrast look. The portrait captures a young child dressed in a traditional white linen tunic. The image is framed behind historic bubble glass (also known as convex or domed glass), which was custom-molded specifically for deep oval portrait frames of this era.
