History: Issued in 1861, these types of local banknotes are commonly referred to as "scrip" or "obsolete currency". During the American Civil War, hard coinage disappeared rapidly from circulation due to hoarding and metal shortages. Local governments, merchants, and banks stepped in by printing emergency fractional (less than a dollar) paper money to keep everyday commerce alive. Design Features: The bill displays the bold title "CORPORATION OF WINCHESTER" across the center. A distinct eagle vignette sits prominently on the right side of the face, with the denomination "25" visible in the upper right corner.
